Are you interested in a virtual German Book Club? We will read a story for German learners together and talk about the story. We will start with a level A1 story. The first Book Club will be on Monday, May 6, 2024, at 7 PM ET (on Zoom).

Small Group Sessions (up to 8 participants)
CAN $15/person

Registration Deadline Saturday, May 4, 2024.

I know that we have members from different time zones. If you are interested in joining the German Book Club but the timing does not suit you, please email me.

Here are three reasons why a book club is beneficial for language learning:

1. Contextual Learning: Stories provide context for new vocabulary, grammar structures, and idiomatic expressions. Instead of learning words or phrases in isolation, you see them used in a meaningful context, which helps you understand their nuances and proper usage.

2. Engagement: Stories capture your interest and imagination, making language learning more enjoyable and motivating. Engagement in a story increases focus and retention of information.

3. Improved Comprehension Skills: Following a story requires you to use various comprehension strategies, such as predicting, inferring, and summarizing. These skills are essential for understanding real-life conversations and texts in the target language.

Stories often repeat keywords and grammatical structures, reinforcing your understanding through repetition. Repetition is crucial for language learning, as it helps solidify new knowledge in your memory.

4. Cultural Insight: Stories often reflect the culture and customs of the language you learn. By reading or listening to stories, you gain insights into the language’s cultural context, helping you better understand the people who speak it.

5. Natural Language Patterns: Stories expose you to authentic language patterns and colloquial expressions that native speakers use. This exposure helps you develop a more natural-sounding speaking and writing style.

6. Emotional Connection: Stories often evoke emotions, which can improve memory retention. When you feel emotionally invested in a story, you are more likely to remember the used vocabulary.

These sessions are for you if:

  • you want to focus on speaking German to become an engaged participant in conversations
  • you want to participate actively in the classroom

During each session, you will:

  • learn new conversation skills and vocabulary
